Dear Clients,

MARKET UPDATE NOV-25

Global spot ocean rates have risen, but we are now seeing some easing with declines reported in the past week on the main East-West trading routes (i.e. China to Europe and China to the USA), however Australia bucked this trend in recent weeks and the freight rates have steadily risen.

We believe we have now seen the peak for 2025, as some carriers are starting to review pricing and offer spot rates for Australia. Fingers crossed this is the case and rates remain steady into 2026.

The window for arrivals into Australia via ocean before Christmas is just about behind us as we head into a very strong airfreight peak season. The airfreight market is reporting very strong volumes, in particular with Black Friday sales and general Christmas stock. As a result, rates have increased over the last few weeks and the expectation is for this to continue into mid-December.

GRI announcements
Have eased somewhat and we don't anticipate the market will likely see another increase until 1st Jan or maybe mid Jan.

Blank Sailings
Carriers continue their approach to maintain supply vs demand, with blank sailings throughout DECEMBER on major trade lanes ex CHINA - AUSTRALIA. The impact is not significant, but is noticeable on varying ports, in particular into EAST COAST AUSTRALIA.

Red Sea
With the announcement by the Houthis that they will honour the Israel/Palestine ceasefire agreement and stop attacking vessel in the Red Sea, much discussion has started on whether the Suez Canal will fully re-open to large scale commercial traffic. Whilst this would be welcomed, for those customers shipping to and from Europe, shipping lines and their insurance providers have a massive task detailing risk assessments on what is still a fragile situation. No formal announcements have been made by any carriers as this time. Summary, watch this space for potential movement in 2026.

Have you planned for the Christmas Period
As you are most likely aware, shipping lines include "ALL CALENDAR" days in the calculation of container detention. This includes public holidays and weekends. Each year we see clients get hit with detention invoices due to warehouse closures or lack of planning.

We highly recommend that you ensure that all containers are de-hired prior to your closure and if any containers are outstanding, that arrangements be made to open gates to minimise costs. Notifying us at 9am on 24th DEC, is not going to achieve the desired outcome, please ensure to notify us well in advance of your closure, otherwise charges will be unavoidable.

Also please keep in mind that normally terminals around Australia include Boxing Day (26th Dec) and New Year's Day (1st Jan) as available days on the wharf, therefore it is vital that if you have cargo arriving during this period that all shipping documents are provided in a timely manner to ensure cargo is customs cleared and available from the wharf to avoid storage charges.

Our operational teams will work closely with you on these matters, but if you know you have cargo arriving during or around these times, please plan ahead and start communicating with us well in advance.

Should you wish to discuss any of these points, please don't hesitate to reach out to your key contact @ Transways Logistics International.
