FREMANTLE TRAFFIC BRIDGE CLOSURE – EARLY 2026
As many of you would be aware, the old (Wooden) Fremantle Traffic Bridge is being replaced under the Swan River Crossing Project. Construction has been ongoing for some time already but as we near 2026, we must remind you that with the pending closure, disruptions and delays to transport are to be expected.
The closure will occur in early 2026 and is estimated to run for 12 months. This will force all traffic onto Stirling Bridge located to the east, near the Left bank. Below are several key points that you may wish to read.
Impact on Trucking and Freight
High volumes of trucks move daily between Fremantle Port and destinations south via Tydeman Road, Stirling Highway and Leach Highway. With the closure of the "OLD" traffic bridge, all heavy vehicles will be forced to use Stirling Bridge servicing the eastern and southern industrial hubs such as Kwinana, Henderson, Canning Vale, Welshpool and Kewdale to name a few, thereby increasing congestion and travel times significantly.
You may not be aware however all heavy vehicles are banned from Canning Highway already. This is nothing new however with all traffic now being forced onto High Street / Leach Highway to exit to the Fremantle Port zone (and not cutting through to Rockingham Road) to head south, we expect increased traffic build up in these key Fremantle Port access areas as all trucks are forced to use the ONE option to exit/enter the Fremantle Port zone (excluding Northern Suburbs clients).
Potential Effects on Trucking
Here's how trucking operations might be affected:
- Longer trip duration with higher risk of delayed onsite arrival times.
- Increased congestion: Key intersections such as Stirling Highway and Canning Highway are expected to be pressure points. Changes to traffic light programming has already taken place however we expect to see this as a pain point.
- Scheduling adjustments: Freight operators may need to allow for extra travel time, reroute where feasible or shift to off-peak transit to avoid peak hour delays.
- A higher volume of containers are expected to move from the Port via rail to Kewdale thereby reducing movements over Stirling Bridge. This may see delivery time frames increase as containers are transferred to rail and then moved overnight to Kewdale.
Summary...We expect issues to arise with on time deliveries, therefore we encourage you (where practicable) to consider 24hour container receivals, allowing greater flexibility to transport companies to continue to service industry effectively.
