Dear Clients,
MARKET UPDATE JUL-25
Overall Market conditions ex North and Southeast Asia into all Australian ports are a little weak however recent indication from some shipping lines, suggestion forward bookings are starting to pick up. We do tend to see this in JULY, as large multinationals, ramp up imports in the lead up to Christmas. Yes it’s just around the corner!
GRI announcements
The most recent round of General Rates Increases (GRI) have largely held. Equipment shortages (especially for 40’HC containers) are contributing to the success of the GRI’S, along with forward booking increases. As a result, AUG GRI’S are gaining traction and could push pricing up further.
2025 Peak Season Surcharge (PSS)
As we approach the traditional peak season into Australia, Carriers are now talking a Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) from 1st AUG, on top of the GRI increases.
ANL, Maersk, MSC and other carriers have announced planned PSS effective 1st August 2025, covering all shipments ex-Asia, Indian Subcontinent, and Middle East into Australia.
We are not sure the market is ready for a PSS + GRI double impact on 1st AUG, the demand doesn’t seem to justify this at this stage.
Blank Sailings
Shipping lines are continuing their aggressive blank sailing programme to aid their GRI & PSS plan’s. This is a little surprising as JULY normally see’s a return to normal scheduling, but due to weaker demand, shipping line’s are running blank schedules into AUG it seems.
Fremantle Port – FEE HIKE.
Expect Price increases on DTHC, OTHC and wharf booking fee’s over in the West.
Media reports this week, have indicated price increases of 295% for the cost of mooring, along with fee hikes ranging from 20% for export containers to 42% for import container handling charges.
The Port of Fremantle is government owned and operated, so Shipping Australia (industry body) has reached out to the Port of Fremantle and Premier Roger Cook for comment. Whilst Transways hasn’t seen any formal shipping line notifications at this stage, it is fair to assume that the shipping lines will pass these increased costs onto cargo owners.
CHINA – AUSTRALIA Government Talks
What will come from the discussions between China and Australia these past couple of days, some of the news is starting to filter out that greater emphasis on customs, quarantine and trade. How this will impact importers or exporters, we will have to wait and see. But if you grow apples, it looks like you will be able to send them to CHINA shortly!
Houthis Attack – RED SEA IMPACT.
You may have seen the video of the Yemeni based Houthi Rebels attacking and sinking the bulk carrier MV Magic on the 6th JULY.
A second vessel has since been sunk as well, ending a 6 month pause in hostilities. This action almost certainly ends any chance global shipping lines will return to the Suez Canal in 2025.
MV Magic, prior to going fully under.
Should you wish to discuss any of these points, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your key contact @ Transways Logistics International.
